If you’re in your 40s and wondering if it’s still possible to get in shape, let me tell you something:
I didn’t lift my first dumbbell until I was about 40. I had no idea how to work out, wore oversized t-shirts, and hid in the corner of the gym, doing my best to follow along with workouts from YouTube.
Today, I’m a personal trainer and the founder of Supero Fitness, helping women—many in their 40s and beyond—transform their bodies and reclaim their confidence. So, if you’re feeling deflated, like you’ve missed your chance, or maybe even intimidated by the gym, I get it. And I’m here to tell you that not only is it possible to get in shape in your 40s, but it’s also possible to feel stronger, more energized, and more empowered than ever.
In this post, I’ll share why getting in shape at 40 is not only achievable but also rewarding in ways you may not expect. I’ll also share some practical, sustainable strategies to get you started and how my programs can help you every step of the way.
One of the most common things I hear from clients is, “Am I too late to start?” Here’s the reality: Many changes we notice in our bodies at this age—like feeling more tired, noticing stubborn weight around the midsection, or losing muscle tone—aren’t solely due to aging. More often, they’re linked to shifts in lifestyle. Work, family commitments, and stress all contribute to lifestyle changes that can affect our fitness and health. The good news? This means we can make positive changes too!
Getting fit in your 40s is about more than just appearance; it’s about building strength, boosting energy, and feeling better in our own skin.
You don’t need a drastic overhaul or an impossible fitness regime; you need a sustainable, balanced approach that fits your life and goals.
When I started, my “why” was simply to feel more confident and comfortable in my body. At 40, I realised that I wanted to feel strong, both mentally and physically, and that getting in shape was the gateway to that confidence. Between me and you I also felt ugly I had lost so much confidence in myself, my body particularly. I never felt good anymore when I went out, nothing seemed to look right and I was so sick of trying to find clothes to hide my belly.
So ask yourself: what’s your “why”? Maybe it’s to have more energy to keep up with your kids or to feel healthier and more vibrant every day. Your “why” will be your anchor when things feel hard or progress seems slow. And believe me, knowing you have a reason behind your goals can make all the difference in building habits that stick.
I need to be honest: there’s no quick fix or magic formula for fitness. Many programs promise fast results, but in my experience, they often set people up to feel even more deflated when those results don’t last or even happen at all. At Supero Fitness, we focus on realistic, achievable changes that you can keep up for life. Of course this takes longer to achieve but in reality there is absolutely no program, diet, regime where you can achieve amazing results in 30 days or 6 weeks. The adverts with the photos of before and after, if not photoshopped are most likely years apart.
Start with small steps like adding a walk to your day, committing to two or three short workouts each week, or swapping one processed snack for a nutritious option. Small changes build momentum. Over time, these habits will make the transformation you’re looking for—and they’ll last.
Strength training is a powerful way to reshape your body and boost your confidence. Not only does it help tone up which is building muscle and burning fat, but it also improves bone density, supports metabolism, and enhances mobility—all essential as we age.
One of the most popular programs I offer is The Lean Muscle Program, which introduces strength training to women who may feel intimidated by weights. This program is structured to fit around busy schedules and includes beginner-friendly workouts that are easy to follow and adapt as you build strength. Strength training can feel empowering and transformative, and it’s something I recommend to every woman I work with.
Forget strict diets or endless calorie counting. For women over 40, it’s especially important to focus on nourishment rather than restriction. Eating well can mean fuelling your body with nutrient-dense, satisfying foods and understanding how different nutrients support your energy, recovery, and progress.
If you’re not sure where to start, I offer nutrition packs through Supero Fitness, which include resources like a Macros Made Simple guide, meal planning tips, and a realistic approach to portion control. These packs are designed to simplify healthy eating so it becomes a part of your lifestyle rather than something you dread.
It’s easy to feel guilty for taking time for ourselves, but rest, recovery, and stress management are essential for lasting results. Overtraining or ignoring recovery can lead to burnout, which is counterproductive. Quality sleep, staying hydrated, and taking time to relax will fuel your journey and help prevent injuries.
I fully understand when you are highly motivated and really want the results you can feel like you're already giving up with a rest day but remember, muscles are destroyed in the gym but they are rebuilt with rest and recovery - and lots of protein!
So, is it possible to get in shape in your 40s? Absolutely, and it may be one of the most empowering things you’ll ever do for yourself. I’ve helped countless women who felt just like you—overwhelmed, unsure, or stuck—and together, we found a path to real, lasting change.
If you’re ready to take that first step but don’t know where to start, I invite you to explore the programs at Supero Fitness, from the Women’s Fat Loss Program to the Metabolic Reboot and beyond. Each one is built to support you in achieving your goals, no matter where you’re starting from. Let’s make your 40s the decade where you feel stronger, healthier, and more confident than ever.
